I haven't been around these forums in years. Looking back and thinking of the many awesome people I met and worked with from this community in the Premium section. Wondering if anyone is around these days, seems like all new faces.

I was around on WHT since 2007, but on & off. So I haven't used it as I should.

Wow, time flies!

(Perldesk.) We actually still use perldesk as primary support for one of our hosting brands. It still works! (Although we've had to kick it a few times over the years.) If it 'aint broke.. don't fix it. Right guys? Guys?
anon-e-mouse · 2019-05-08 06:37 PM · #2
There's quite a few of them around. Some are all grown up

It's nice and reassuring to see the oldies are still here. Allow me to express my gratitude for making WHT what it is now.

R.I.P Headsurfer To this day, I still miss EV1/RackShack. Memba when life was simple? When nobody ran cPanel because it was full of bugs?

The participation from most of the members have been a drastic decline in recent years.
MattF · 2019-05-23 04:57 PM · #3
Still about. I guess one of the first. Still some decent content but not sure what happened since say 2007, time to capitalize was several years ago, instead we see forced https redirect landing in 2019 (the shame) and other stuff winding down such as the irrelevant hostingcon/some-news-site-that-i-forgot-name-of. No one has heard of WHT nowadays outside of i-use/i-resell/i-sell/i-relicense cpanel circles, 95% could be merge into a cpanel sub forum. The decline is relevant as it speaks volumes, and very much related to this topic, as the under investment in the last few years has had an impact on those participating in the early days, do we still have encoding mismatches on page 1 for non asciii characters?
enhancedhost · 2019-07-05 08:48 PM · #3
I miss Ev1servers, Server Matrix, The Planet etc the simplicity is no longer there.
hekwu · 2019-09-06 07:54 PM · #3
I've been here since sometime.... actually don't know when. My dry humor and stinging comments did not fit some people... lol Plus this section died a slow death so....

Warnings and infractions since 2008 You could have just have said my name I think a handful of solid core members are still around that share relevant and positive posts. It has calmed down from some of the train wreck topics. One post, and 78 replies within each page refresh!

Don't get me wrong, I only have/use this one in the last ~decade but I had one before this... no idea what the username even was, years ago lost all of those records

Have been WHT fan..Yes I agree I no longer check messages often for last couple of years. I still remember people online on the footer..OMG! Good old days. 10 Years back I have got many contacts, server management orders, hired for years..Looking back! Years are like days.
WirralNet Matt · 2020-05-11 05:22 PM · #6
I come and go and have done since 2003. I think I was a lurker before then. WHT never loses its appeal, but one is too busy these days and I like to switch-off outside of office hours. When I first started, I spent 20 hours a day mixed between business and WHT lol. It is the most invaluable resource I've found for operating in the hosting industry, my peers on here are an encyclopaedia of knowledge and experience.
(Stephen) · 2019-05-09 04:56 PM · #7
Good question, am I still around?

Been here since 2008, so eleven years on and off. It's been a blast and I've certainly learned a lot from WHT.
kris1351 · 2019-12-09 01:35 PM · #7
Mostly a lurker these days since I sold my last hosting company. Still come to see what's going on though.
EvilMan · 2020-05-21 08:34 AM · #7

Yes its sad people are so easily controlled and led down a control path...... WHT has an SSL cert but these people dstill complain,EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NO NEED FOR SSL HERE!! Truly very sad..... No one has use of thier own minds now and its sad.....

MattF · 2019-05-24 03:49 AM · #9
SSL should be mandatory on all websites *, a web forum about hosting should at the forefront of this advocating. It's not that you consider your WHT profile and PMs etc.. top secrets there are other concerns such as MITM injection that could affect other websites (e.g. inject a payload that makes a GET request to a delete button on your CRM - yes some CRMs are built with destructive actions on a GET path), ease of local DNS poisoning, and even for performance, please read up via Tory Hunt. On the performance issue HTTP/2 is https only not directly by spec but due to browser support (iiuc), and with the initial handshake reduced to a minimal number of round trip combined with CDN edge termination you'd have to be insane to preference standard http:80 as we move forward unless you like the slow web. I recall from a previous thread you still use IE6 and champion that as secure, I don't spend too much time on this but you missing out of opt-in enhancements that make your browsing more secure including CORS, X-Frame-Options, HSTS, and so on, heck I dont even think IE6 can take advantage of ASLR. If you want the old web of http and IE6 that's fine but let's stop spreading this nonsense that its secure, and I have no idea what conspiracy theory you on with "control path" Returning to my controlling overlords... * I had a discussion with the owner of a coworking space the other day we talked about how many people leave their laptops unlocked and then moved on to MITM, we seriously considering blocking port 80 at the end of year at the mitrok router - thats how seriously I'd push this.

I have been around since 2008/2009 and was pretty active through 2010/2011 at the forefront of Cloud-based servers and "cloud" in general. Unfortunately, I did not use a third-part email when registering back then and sold the domain that my account's email was based on. I had no clue what I used for my password, and WHT was not thrilled in the least about giving out access to someone in this type of predicament. LOL, they were tight. I even gave up personal info, contact details, and knew the exact email address. I was about five emails deep in the correspondence when I just decided to give up and start over.

This Industry has matured and slowed down a little. Things are moving in ever new directions, here & there. I'm guessing some have simply moved on to conquer other new bleeding edge areas of IT.

10 years ago the webhostingtalk was better, I tried the Premium membership in past and I can say most pointless waste of money especially now as the webhostingtalk does not generate a penny, elsewhere is better now in way of community and moderators are not paranoid about signatures!
Collabora · 2020-06-08 07:34 PM · #15
Since 2004. Forum has become boring with most new posts adverts and "New Member" robot posts. It has lost its relevancy

What exactly does TROLL mean?? I get called that all the time and I dont like it.... I looked it up and it says its someone who likes to cause problems.... I DONT DO THAT!!!!!! WHEN I SAY I LOVE ANALOGUE I MEAN IT!!!!!!!! -- Im not trying to force my views on anyone,I just have strong opinions on some things... On 1 site someone said years ago "Dude is the best example of an innocent troll I have ever seen" Does it bother people when someone like me WHO ISNT A SHEEPLE MORON and can think for themselves comes and starts talking about different stuff than everyone else is or likes??? I dunno.......

Some of us are still around - more now (thanks, cpanel!) than in the past x years because of various issues, in my case, but still alive (thanks, modern medicine!) and kicking. I think @ eva2000 remembers when WHT was first starting off. Fun fact: we actually hosted the first incarnation of WHT. At the time, we were just starting, without any fulltime, dedicated staff, and it very rapidly outgrew what we could do then, so moved off elsewhere. Ah, the good old days....

I was around back in 2012; however I no longer have access to the old email address to do any account resets, and with the old account having a post count of only 5. I am back after 7 years and to make more of a contribution than I did then. The community does seem a little less "crowded" and the posts seem more under control. So thanks to Admin and the Moderation Team.

Good point, so we'll deduct the lurking time then? Personally, I am very thankful for WHT, the people I have interacted with here over the years and the things I learned. Wondering what the future holds for WHT in its current format though.

Not as old as some of you, but I've been here for nearly a decade!

I'm from 2006, and @ DanielP is from 2000. Not much good to comment on these days...

Wow. I remember ordering some logos from you like 5-10 years ago.

Aussie Bob!!!!! You were the guy who saved a lot of people after MCHost went kapoot. You saved me. At one point, I was going to throw in the towel, but you gave me inspiration to continue... just about 20 years ago now, we had a conversation about self-employment and things like that. I'm glad I didn't quit my dream, and since then... life has certainly had ups and downs.. but the choice to stay self-employed 20 years ago was never a regret and has allowed me to achieve my dreams, and then some. Thank you!
